 All My Dreams Excerpt

"That has to be the worst color scheme I have ever seen."  A voice broke the silence behind her.

The knuckle still in her mouth to sooth the scrape, Loryn jumped in her skin surprised that the voice was in English.  She hadn't heard it much of late.  Then she took a calming breath as she looked at what she was stuck with.  "I've been told some movie star is responsible for this mess.  It completely takes away any respect I had for them creating art if they could do this to history.  And the bed and breakfast is 2 drives to the right," Loryn answered knowing why he had to be there.

Someone had gotten the address wrong in the brochure and it wasn't caught until they had been sent out.  Carmen, the very apologetic neighbor had been delivering her food on a regular basis, if only she would redirect them to the right gate.  All the delicacies of the island were there for her to eat made by a hand that knew how to make them well; sobrasada, ensaimada, longaniza, salsitxa, butifarron, camaiot, cuixet, jamon, hogazas, pan moreno.  It had Loryn thinking that it was about time for her to come again.  Every two weeks like clockwork, it would be a treat she would miss once the brochures were all used up.

"I'm not looking for the bed and breakfast.  This is the first drive I came to that wasn't gated that I could get into for some help.  I need to be some place by 7:00 and I don't know where I am.  The directions I was given don't correspond with anything I've passed and trying to fix it only got me lost further."

Loryn turned and felt her jaw drop even if she held it tight not to show it to him.  He was one of those rugged drop-dead gorgeous men that were in the movies, but to tell the truth no one ever saw in day-to-day life.  Long dark hair, enough stubble to not quite be called a beard enrobed a strong chin.  He was tanned, tall, and muscular to top it off.  "Where is it you need to be?"  She struggled to get out  without seeming lust struck.  It had been a long time.

"Alcudia on the coast."

"Ah yes, the Roman ruins.  Many go to see them.  Be sure to see the theatre as well."

He looked quickly at his watch.  "The way please, I'm going to be late as it is."

"To tell the truth you're not.  At the end of the drive, go right, past all the dirt roads that are probably where you were turned around in the first place.  At the intersection with the asphalt road, take a left.  That will get you back on the main road north to Inca and Alcudia."

"I recognize Inca from my directions."

Loryn nodded.  "You should still be there well before 7.  Many people give directions only talking about the paved roads.  If it's one of the dirt roads then they'll start naming landmarks.  Like the old joke, turn right at the old hanging tree."

He walked over to her and held out his hand.  "Thank you Miss . . ."

"Mrs. Loryn Salazar."  She shook her head as she stood to show him out.  "This isn't the 50's.  Why do I keep saying that.  Too much talk with Ramon I suspect," she muttered.  Talking to herself slipped out every now and then.  Day after day working on the olives alone, evenings alone, working on the house whom else did she have to talk to?

"Your husband is gone I take it?"

Loryn looked up almost as if he hadn't been there just then.  The look in those pale blue eyes of his gave her goose bumps.  They were veiled eyes hinting at secrets while Gabriel's had been so open and inviting.

"All my dreams are dead."

"I'm sorry."

He was one of the first she had heard out of the blue that sounded as if he actually meant it.  Most of those she met always sounded as if that was what they expected she wanted to hear and they didn't really care.  "You should get going if you want to get there on time."

"Thank you." he replied and then was out of her life.

She went back to work on the wall.  Of course, she didn't really know a thing about him; perhaps that was why he made her heart beat as it did.  She would never learn he was a jerk like the others.  She could just imagine him when her mind felt like wandering to other things without bringing up Gabriel and Sonia.
